Anyone can write a few lines of information describing who they are and what they do.
But when it comes to an Artist/Band Biography it can be enormously time-consuming to come up with a coherent, readable document that fits on to one or two pages and satisfies the very brief attention span of contemporary audiences.
It has to be punchy, informative and complete. It forms the basis of all other communications and, although it may change over time, it must consistently correspond to your identity as an artist and musician.
Below is an example of a one page bio that we completed for American band Barkhouse. They are a hard-working semi-pro outfit whose members have known each other since they were very young. We worked with them to get the story right, the tone right and the information correct.
Here’s how it works. You can submit an easy to use field-led form where you simply insert all the main points about you and your music. It is a step by step process and the more conversational you are, the better. The end result will be a bio that has personality and tells the world that, actually, you’re cool people as well as interesting artists.
Or, if you prefer you can get in touch via email and/or social media links for a preliminary chat. Yes, it will cost money but not as much as you might think and certainly dependent on your resources, expectations and needs as much as anything else. But you won’t know if you don’t ask and we won’t bite.
Next, we send you a primary draft. You tell us what you want corrected and then we create the BIOGRAPHY for you. This is the foundation stone for the PRESS KIT. Once you have had a look at the example biography below, go to the Press Kits page and find out what can be done for you there. Also look at the examples on the HOME page. They include sound files to illustrate that your one pager can take a number of forms. It’s your identity that is must be the common thread across a dizzying array of formats and information delivery systems.
Click on the text link below the image to have a look at the Barkhouse example – again its important that this is a portable and downloadable document. You want this information to travel as widely as possible.
Biographical material has also been collated, written and produced by Music Flag associate Michael Clark for, among others, Tommy Smith, Brian Kellock and The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO).
Also, in the course of writing concert programmes for the SNJO, Michael has written numerous bespoke artist, composer and arranger bios, including those for Branford Marsalis, Dave Liebman, Jacqui Dankworth, Kurt Elling, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Stan Kenton, Courtney Pine, Geoffrey Keezer, Joe Locke, Florian Ross, Bob Mintzer and Michael Abene.
